Watching the clock

by May   Jun 12, 2006

A too-slow progression
as the minutes wear out
the clock ticks slowly
as if it knows what i'm about

I wait with impatience
staring at the wall
wondering why I watch you
always walk down this hall

I think about your smile
and the way it makes me feel
the butterflies in my stomach
are even quite surreal

You stroll down the hall
finally, it seems
coming from nowhere
but straight out of my dreams

I hold my breath
as you come right by
pausing for a moment
to softly mutter "hi"

I just look down
examining my shoes
pretending like I've never seen
the blue and white hues

You walk on by
I don't know what to say
but I can just imagine
you running far away

Disgusted with myself
I muster all my might
and tap you on the shoulder
trying hard to be polite

You greet me with a smile
as you turn around
my heart melts
and I can't make a sound

I stutter
searching in my head
for any trite phrases
that haven't already been said

At a loss for words
I simply smile too
wondering how I got so lucky
to find a friend like you
