A war story

by Tainted Beauty   Jul 3, 2006

As were creeping through the bushes,
I hear the sounds of this forbidden land,
My heart beats hard against my chest,
My palms are sweating on the weapon in my hand,

There's a rustle in the bushes,
My secret human prey,
I grip my gun a bit tighter,
I will kill a man today,

My fingers on the trigger,
He walks foolishly closer to me,
I aim the gun and fire,
He is shot and killed mercilessly,

The rest of my troop gathers round,
We know the battle has just begun,
I crouch, cocked and loaded,
I sit there silently with my gun,

A new parade of men,
Attempt to carefully sneak by,
We quickly open fire,
These men fear for their lives,

The bushes are quiet now,
There is a wretched smell of death,
Bloody bodies surround me,
There are no men left,

My conscious starts to taunt me,
I feel a weight upon my chest,
Ive taken the lives of people tonight,
My heart stings with regret,

This war will soon be over,
The survivors may reenlist,
So many bodies to be removed,
What good has come from this?

A great poem, that displyas the true feelings of the men at war and brings together, nicely, the bitter regret of war. Beautiful poetry.

This was a wonderful poem. It brought to life the tragedy of a war. You gave us the perspective of a soldier and what they go through. Eventually you turn around and the message is clear, war is stupid. Really good job on this poem.
