Daddy and his golden halo

by Chelsey   Jul 18, 2006

My mommy died when I was only 2 years of age
Drunk drivers think their the king of the road
Ever since then Dad has never left my side
And to him I sit here and write this ode

I remember when I was just 5-yrs-old
I lost function and sunk to the bottom of the lake
With his work clothes still on he jumped in and got me
He was the first person I saw when I was awake

When I was around 8 years or nine
He tied a knot around my tooth and the door
He said, “Baby we don’t have to do this”
But I said I don’t want my baby teeth anymore

When I was 10 and had a nightmare
I’d walk in the dark and say “I had a bad dream”
Daddy would crawl in my bed and fall asleep
After that I never again had to scream

When I was getting bigger at 11 years old
Dad would still pick me up and place me on his shoulders
When Grandma told him I’d hurt his back, he said
“Mom, she’s never too big for me to hold her”

When I turned 12 years old and started my menstrual
Right away dad asked “would you like a particular brand?”
I said “just grab a box and some pills for pain”
Even through that daddy held my hand

Now I’m ready to drive and get a job
I see how daddy gets tears in his eyes
To see how fast his only daughter is growing
I’ve changed in style and I’ve changed in size

Daddy always stays up late with me Friday nights
We pop in a movie and light the fireplace
If I happen to fall asleep on the couch
Dad will still pick me up and carry me up the staircase

My daddy wears a golden halo on his head
Strangely it’s something only I can see
Sometimes I look to him in admiration
And hope he’d pass that halo onto me

I want to be the hard worker like him
I want a golden halo just like his
I want to take the genes of my father
And do everything he’s done for me for my kids

I wonder how he got his halo
From his attitude? His looks? His laugh?
All I know is daddy and his golden halo
Is something no one else I know has

*the first two stanzas aren't true* :-)
