My Guardian Angel

by Skyler   Jul 31, 2006

It was just another sunny day
As I took him out of the pasture
I brushed his coat
I slid on the saddle

As I jumped into the saddle
I slowly secured my helmet
We walked to the edge of the field
Then started to wards the woods

It was cool and damp in the woods
A lot better from the burning heat of the sun
We ran up a hill and around all sorts of bend and curves in the trail

I trusted him to get me through, he trusted me to get him through
Its like we were one

An hour passed and then another
And I figured it was time to go
We slowed to a walk
And I slowly slipped off my helmet

As we neared the edge of the woods
I got this little nagging feeling
Something telling me to put my helmet back on
So I did

When we got to the edge of the field
He suddenly shot off like a cannon
And we ran through the field so wild and free
And then it happened

I felt a shift in the saddle
I knew something wasnt right
I looked down to see the saddle twisting and moving to the side
I didnt have time to fix it because then it just slid all the way to the side

I reached out and grabbed for something, anything
And I caught his neck, his big strong neck
He tried turning his head to catch me but I was already too far down

All I could hear was the pounding of his hooves
I could smell the grass it was so close to my face
And his hooves were inches from my face

And then I slipped, as I did I quickly squeezed my eyes shut
I landed on my head with a terrible thud
And I just landed in a heap
Not moving at all and every part of my body screaming in pain

As I slowly lifted my head I tried to get up
But just fell back down
As I tried it again
My horse came up and let me lean on him
I carefully made it to my feet

We cautiously made our way back to the barn
We stopped inside and I slowly and painfully
Took off his bridle and saddle
Then I led him to his pasture and let him go there

I gingerly sat down outside and watched him
He was the best horse Id ever known

The next day I went to the doctors
Where they informed me I was one lucky person
Telling me that I had been inches away from death

My guardian angel was definitely watching over me that day
And I felt it
I know now that the voice I heard was my angel warning me
And I remember feeling that I wasnt alone
While I clung to my horse for dear life
