The girl behind the camera

by Chelsey   Nov 24, 2006

She always showed up to school dances
With shoes and a cheap dress
Tried to put on a little makeup
She had not one friend to impress

She knew of people’s names
And when she’d say “hello”
They smiled and walked away
And she’d always want to follow

She’d ask for them to smile
They’d all crowd around
She’d get pictures of the D.J
And the people being crowned

All the while there she stood,
Acting like she knew someone
Pretending she was popular
And like she was actually having fun

She saw people who had friends
She’d watch them decorate their lockers
Then she’d open up her lock
And wish they’d decorate hers

So she put pictures up of people
Who she hardly even knew
Wishing they’d say “hi”
Or, “that picture is so cute!”

She’s so down about the way she looks
That stupid ugly red hair
That if she was in front of the camera
No one would know she’s there

The girl behind the camera
Would give anything in the world
To be noticed and accepted
By one of the popular girls

*this poem was about a girl I know named Cory who isn't well known..her situation makes me so sad and I decided to put it into a poem*

Human nature can be so fickle can't it Chelly? I mean I couldn't really relate to this much, I was always in that popular group at school but being popular wasn't all it was made out to be. Looking back my highschool life probably would have been alot easier should I have been mroe selective about the people I associated with and made my own decisions about what mattered to be rather by being swayed by the popular influence...thats in retrospect of course, i didnt know then what I know now :o)
Your poem was beautifully written as always chels, with a deep meaning and great inspiration for the many young people out there who can relate to it.
Guess there's always another side to the story though which actually inspires me to write a new poem!!

    Great job babes!

This strikes a little close to all of us at some point in our lives. You truly made me feel like I was a gawky teenager again going through the world and trying to find my niche. Kudos to you for a very emotion rendering piece. 5/5
