Never Look Back

by Jemma   Dec 20, 2006

We've made so many mistakes I lost count long ago
But we always found our way in the end
But we got lost in the haze
In the fury of a midday daze
In the heat of the sun
It could have happened to anyone
Struggling on
Like a dream that just won't end
But you know you just have to wake up
And you're screaming in your head
Cos you know you have to find a way out
But how do you break free
When you're not chained
When you're lost in the maze of your mind
And we fall into our subconscious
We fell so long ago
Gone to autopilot
Gone to a passive, indifferent world
When the time is right it will end
Getting out of the car
Heading for the crusher
Homeward bound
After such a long holiday
So many smiles buried in the photographs
And they're stuck on the paper
Somehow it feels like our souls have left
To dwell in an image
Walking different pathways
Can't see the other in the darkness
And our hands no longer touch
As we walk down the lonely streets
And we sit in darkness
When together we had such light
Never look back
We can never look back
When we hit the car crash
And the doors are flung wide
Only your dreams escape
Only your dreams die
But we always carry on
We made too many mistakes
Growing apart with every passing day
Growing old when we should have stayed young
Right to the end of our days
And it always felt like your hand bound me down
Even as you tried to lift me up
I dreamt each night of flight
Soaring over the hills
Searching for you, searching for me
But we were too small to find in the deep ravines
In the valleys where I took to hiding
It always felt like hiding
We were always running away
Never looking back
Never looking back
So somehow we're homeward bound
Now we've come to the end of the road
Now we're lying in the gutter
And the cars smashed up
And we're being carried away
And the lights are dimming
And our eyes are flickering open
To the joy of a new day
Even when the birds are missing
And the skyscrapers are carving the sky
And the cars are rushing past
And the people trudge on by
Facing away
Back to back
Lost in our dreams
A pleasant concussion
A pleasant illusion
So close, so far apart
Never again
We can't look back
We just carry on going our own way
