Layers Upon Layers

by Melissa   Jan 9, 2007

There are many layers
to the human soul,
some are just too thick to peel

Many stick to surface roads,
routes with no substance
and pathways without possibilities
a lane not worth merging
into our own measly car of indirection

So we take the highway
in search of forks for choice
and perhaps a spoon to shelter
our once sequestered hearts,

but driving alone
only leads us back home

To where love existed fearlessly
in a small space of time
that seemed untouchable

until words became unkind

and were thrown like poetic daggers
at our awkwardly hanging jaws
ending in over sized exclamation points
that stared us down into hibernation

Life can be so sleepy sometimes,
especially after climbing out of the wreck
that made your feelings bleed
yet we are driven to live
even after our heroes are all dead

Unusual. I'm not sure I understood everything in this piece, but a lot of it was very clear. How true so much of this is. Sounds like a poem about advice mixed in with your own personal problems. It was like thoughts freely flowing from your head in any which way. It was neat and different. Original!

I enjoyed reading this awesome poem. I can't pick a favorite line, because it's all so perfect. Imagery, word choice, flow....flawless. 5/5

This is incredible. It reminds me of a saying I've heard many times as a child. Live is mearly death and the journey. It is the journey that defines our life and the paths we take.
