It Shouldnt Hurt to be a Child

by Ixora   Mar 3, 2007

Many years ago a child was born
into the arms of a young woman
everyone told her to give it away
but she said "i don't think i can"

a year passed and the woman cared
but life was just too hard
the men who came often left too quick
and showed her little regard

the woman drank and drank and drank
then worked and drank some more
often she'd forget to feed the child
while she was passed out on the floor

one day after Bob left her
her heart broken for the last time
she threw the baby in the garbage
never thinking much of the crime

the baby stayed for two days
no food or water or sleep
the baby cried but no one heard
so it continued to weep

it took another day for someone to find her
barley alive the cop took her out
an old man with pain in his eyes
who seemed to know what she was about

after she got better she was sent to a home
where many kids would live
all of them where cold and evil
they had nothing more to give

she glanced around and it took a year
by this time she was two
until the first person took her home
and she didn't know what to do

for two more years she lived there
in a calm yet cold home
although it was only a man and a woman
at least she wasn't alone

then that horrid day
the woman suddenly died
the man was crushed beyond hope
and the girl constantly cried

that night she slept in bed
expecting it to be her last
she suddenly woke up
when she heard of something past

her bed sank in a bit
and she turned to see the man
she smiled up at him
and then the nightmare began

"you know little baby
you're the only one still here
i love you i wont give you away,"
he said and took another swig of beer

then his hand reached her
and pulled her in a hug
then he reached lower
and brought her on the rug

scared but not knowing why
she pushed his hand away
the frown came on his face he said
"don't u love me? don't u want to stay?"

tears rolled down her face
as the little girl was raped
the next morning she tried to run
but realized she could never have escaped

walking home she cries
and he hugs her at the door
"baby don't u do that,
don't you run I'll love you more"

every night for six years
her "father" came to bed
eventually she stopped crying
stopped listening to the words he said

it was in school she learned
how abnormal this was
she called the emergency line
told them to save her from what he does

the home they sent her to next
left her beaten and abused
every day she'd go to school
hide the fact that she was bruised

no longer could she ask for help
she realized it was useless
thinking back on her last home
she figured this was progress

until she was seventeen
this girl live in varieties of hell
and eventually she moved on
but she remember her past well

one day she was walking home
when she heard a baby cry and her heart went wild
she turned into the dark ally and picked it out of the garbage
"hush, baby i know it shouldn't hurt to be a child"
