A Tragic Afternoon Drive

by Krissey   Jul 8, 2006

Car doors slammed, the stereo screamed,
Her brother laughed beside her.
She backed the car out of the driveway,
And the scenery became nothing but a blur.

On their way to a friends party
Not realizing what was up ahead
They expected to get wasted and have fun
Not have one of them end up dead

The light was green; it was their turn to go.
She stepped on the accelerator, pushed it to the floor.
The guy to the right of them was drunk and didn't stop,
He sped right through the intersection and hit her door.

She could hear her mother’s voice in her head
“Let me tell you what will happen when you die
Whether you be awake or sleeping
Parts of your life will flash before your eyes”

She saw her and her brother playing,
Laughing and having fun.
They were swinging in the shady park,
Back when they were young.

The backyard parties were such a blast
Her mother dressed her and him alike
She saw Christmas Eve in ’88
When they both received their new red bike

She remembered the talk he gave her,
Before she went on her first date.
He was the protective brother type,
And wouldn't settle for any guy less than great.

She remembered sitting upon daddy’s lap
She sat on one knee and him on the other
They became the best of friends in life
She always was fond of her big brother

As she came back to it, she heard the sirens,
The ambulance was on the scene.
She looked over at her brother,
And used all her strength to scream.

She felt needles poking her in the arm
They had placed a tube through her nose
She faintly remembered when she was little
She always thought those things were gross

She wondered about her brother,
How was he doing right now?
He looked terrible in the car,
Blood oozing over each eyebrow.

She also wondered how she was alive
She wondered what she was doing here
She experienced the flashbacks her mother explained
Wondering if she was now living in another place, another year

The nurse came into her room saddened
Told her the chances that he'll live are slim
Thats when realization hit this sister
The flashbacks going through her mind were of him

Last line of the poem.. "were" of him, not was.

Very good poem. I can imagine this being my little brother and little sister if anything were to happen to one of them - they are exceptionally close. It hit home pretty well.
