Forced to stay alive

by firexdancer   Feb 22, 2007

I sit here in the darkness
rocking in the deep
blankets wrapped around me
trying not to fall asleep

for if i say goodnight, memories hiding behind eyes
will come back to haunt a tortured mind
blood that used to flow free, now pumping blue,
under skin as shallow as the skies

my scream echoes,
from the depths of slit throats
as i try to turn away,
from the masks that still gloat

trying to ignore the hundreds,
begging to survive
shamed by the guilt
for i am forced to stay alive

hands reach up for the light,
but lungs burn dry
as the breath once there
is stolen by black night

I enjoyed reading this poem, although I'm not quite sure what it's about.

Either way, it's wonderfully written and has excellent word choice.
