By Chance

by charles   Sep 8, 2008

It was just an old glass bottle someone tossed off to the side of the road
Most people just went on by, never taking the time to notice
But as I was walking it caught my eye because of the sun shinning on it
As I picked it up I saw a dandelion trampled under its weight
Inside was a small ant crawling around as if searching for a way out
I noticed the reflection of the passing clouds and felt a slight breeze go by
I poured the ant out beside the flower and tossed the bottle into the trash
Later I thought about the ant trying to reach the dandelion
I wondered if both would have died from their shared burdens
As I glanced out the window I wondered if I weren't so different
Frantically trying to reach the flower of my life and finding some joy at last
Then the thought was broken by the sound of someone tossing a bottle from a passing car
Though I may never break my glass barrier, there's always the hope that some passer-by will find me
