One summer day

by Smilie   Sep 18, 2008

I step outside into the warm summer heat
i could feel the heat beating my back
the sun shinning so bright
i need sunglasses to shield my eyes
i see a lot of kids laughing and playing
people standing outside, chillin'
cars stopping in front of hoses to cool off
a fight going on at the end of the street
sweat glistening on the angry men's faces
jaws clenched and angry fists
come flying out or nowhere

i turn my head and i see an ice cream truck
its music inviting kids to come and buy
abruptly the sky changes
clouds appear and the sky turns dark
a little boy runs across the street toward the ice cream truck
but he never made it there
there is a loud bang
a body lay limp on the hot sidewalk
at that moment it started pouring
cold water everywhere
steam rising from the ground
the men stopped fighting
they rushed to the scene
everybody is frantic
i hear sirens blaring
they carry the poor boy on the stretcher into the ambulance

i see people shaking their heads
sad faces replace shocked ones
the kids pack up their stuff and leave
the men return to their homes
everyone else follows
the whole street is desolate dead and quiet
the ice cream truck drives away
