The Abyss (Villanelle)

by Sylvia   Dec 8, 2008

Deeper and deeper, into the abyss,
quick sand, sucking and pulling me down.
Hand over hand, climbing out, I try to resist.

Feelings of darkness persist,
cannot breathe, going to drown,
deeper and deeper, into the abyss.

My mind filled with thoughts that are amiss.
Thinking, sinking again, I realize with a frown,
hand over hand, climbing out, I try to resist.

If I simply let go will there be bliss,
or thorns adorning a crown?
Deeper and deeper, into the abyss.

Is there anyone to assist,
as I swirl around and around.
Hand over hand, climbing out, I try to resist.

Will I cease to exist,
wearing a flowing white gown.
Deeper and deeper, into the abyss,
hand over hand, climbing out, I try to resist.
