Monsters

by Larry Chamberlin   Jan 22, 2012

The monsters that roam these shores
know where we make our homes,
though rarely do we see them in light.

Bring torches with you in darkness
in hopes you will discourage attack
but do not be fearless, that is foolish.

The monsters that prey upon us here
depend on innocents wandering about -
wait patiently for wrong steps to pounce.

Why have we not ridden ourselves
of this constant menace to safety?
These monsters that prowl are us.

Sir Larry, you always outshine this site with your pieces. Never read such a simple-yet-outstanding write ever since I started to write poetry here. You are one of a kind, pa, one of a kind, seriously.

It is completely true that we are our worst enemies. We are monsters at times, we prey on ourselves.

    I loved this write. Father.

    Firstly...

Thanks for the nightmares I'm going to have tonight lol

    Secondly... awesome.

What I loved about this piece is it kept making me guess throughout the poem asking "I wonder who these monsters are"
I thought for a second this was some kind of child like monster bed time story until I realised that it was in the dark poem section so that changed my mind.

The ending was brilliant. It was like ohhhhhhh yeah

I read it again and then I thought of two things - there are the monsters who try to attack us in the dark alleys in the middle of the night. Those psychopaths.

Then of course I thought of the monster that we all have within us... our let's say dark side that we usually keep hidden, and sometimes - sometimes they just come out

    Brilliant!

Masterful. Easy to read but longer, much longer to chew over.

Larry- Not only is this a dark piece, but to me its inspirational as well.... to be able to reconnect and understand that all of us are our own monsters... is a powerful thing... on a silly note, I scare myself often when I look at the mirror and see my facial mask and chaotic hair curlers all a muk... ha ha ha

but seriously.... we all have a deep mysteries within us and when we can see the monster within that is when we can overcome obstacles.... this write deeply touched me... well done~

    Holy shish-kabab!

    Larry that is a masterpiece.
I understand that we are monsters, we just wait for each others' mistakes to prey on each other because it would be a great opportunity when in times of weakness... Yes, vulnerability makes it easier to destroy someone.

It's like an animal kingdom it became.. The lambs prey on the lion, when it has its leg scarred.

Great putting this idea into a dark, sizzling piece.
