A Mother's Love?

by Liz   Jan 11, 2013

The stanzas in [brackets] are the thoughts of an innocent child.
The rest are the thoughts of a lost mother.
-

[Mommy you're beautiful, you know?
But why have you been crying?
You should know that I've been trying
to show you that I love you so.]

Baby, that sweet smile you've got
makes it so hard to do this.
Let me give you one last kiss,
before I get a second thought.

[I wish you'd say what's going on,
why you're not rocking me to sleep.
Your eyes are so dark and deep,
you haven't slept in so long.]

Boy, this is heavy on my mind,
can't imagine life without you.
And though nobody would want to,
I'm taking you with me this time.

[But mommy, I'm happy here,
with the way you hold and kiss me.
Don't you think daddy will miss me,
when he knows we've disappeared?]

No one will miss you like I,
nor understand my love for you.
There is nothing I wouldn't do.
yes, love, I would even die.

[Momma, what's wrong with your eyes?
They don't look the same anymore.
You aren't smiling like before.
I promise I'll quiet my cries.]

Oh, sweet child of mine,
the stars in your sky are bleeding.
Though you're the first to be leaving,
I'm following behind.

Writing this was difficult and easy. It's based on the tragedy that happened days ago when a young mother shot her 6 month old child to death, and proceded to shoot herself. She survived on life support for a few days until the decision was made to end it. Though she had her problems, the mother was a great person. And baby Jonah was the happiest little baby you could ever meet. Both of their beautiful smiles will be missed here.

Wow, as I write this tears roll down my eyes, this was very touching and though I dont remember the story I guess this mother thought what she was doing was for the best (and jo doubt I will get shot down for saying this) as most mums do think they are doing what's for the best and their love is unconditional and others not so much. I love you rhyme scheme with this and how its like a dialogue between mother and child just before the awful deed was done. A very touching write that pulled at my heart strings. I also like the questioning in the title as if questioning whether or not this was an act of a mothers love.

It's so true, nobody will ever understand a mothers love for her child. I've thought of leaving my life behind a lot in the last while but just one look or thought about my baby boy and it changes. I couldn't leave him behind. This is a very sad situation and one that is sadly all to commen here in the UK. This is very well written as always and the stanzas that were the child's made me cry.. Mummys eyes.. Brilliant as always.

First of all I really liked that you put a question mark in your title...it makes the reader think before even opening up the poem.

I hadn't heard of this, probably because I've been overseas where english is not the spoken language so, although tragic, I'm glad you brought this to my attention through your verse.

It's hard to understand why someone would take the life of their own child but we are not here to judge and this poem was not judgemental in anyway....just expressing sorrow for both lives lost.

    Very well written...enjoyed it!

This poem breaks my heart. It's beautifully written and filled with so much emotion.

At first I thought the mother was leaving her family and saying goodbye to her baby, the first two stanzas made me think that. But as I continued reading it became so clear what was on her mind.

I love the way you got inside the mothers head and in her words justified (in her mind) why she took the child's life as well as her own. The way this is written is filled with so much understanding and emotion.

I've never read a poem that actually made me cry but this hit something deep inside of me and made me feel so much pain. For the situation and the family, the reality of it all. If I could nominate this, I would.
