Ashes (Tanka)

My eyes still flavor
the color of fire, and
those fingernails still
carry the remains of all
the burnt letters I wrote you.

    Very nice, Meme!

I can see the reflection of flames in her eyes and the ashes under nails. It makes me think that the speaker either tried to take the letters from the fire, or she played in the ashes. Did you mean to use the word "flavor" in the first line or "favor"? Either way, I like flavor because it shows how concentrated those eyes were on the fire, which show the speaker's state of mind. Favor can mean the same thing. It could mean that the speaker favors staring at the flames that are destroying the last existing evidence of her relationship.

I don't know if she's happy or sad that about the relationship ending, and I like that. It adds a bit of mystery to it. I can also interpret this in an entirely different way. I'd like to think that the speaker is burning letter to cover up a secret and is smiling a sadistic smile, as the flames reflects in her eyes. But that's just me.

Oh goodness, I let out a breath at the end because this is so packed with emotion and history with this person. The intensity of this write surprised me...the image you give the reader is strong and burning with passion... I always think someone who writes letters to another they care for is giving so much, it takes time but it's a lot more personal, intimate. And whatever happened, now they seemingly don't mean as much and the result is they are left to be ashes....A really depressing read, but you carry such a torn, heart-breaking voice!

This is one intense Tanka Meme...

the sadness this piece holds in a small form is a large one... to burn the letters of a lost love is emotional moment in itself and then you deliver the message with imagery... scattered ashes in your hands.. oh mercy this is heartbreaking...
