Backyard Adventures - Hopper (The French Frog)

by Hellon   Aug 21, 2013

Soon the lily pond became
a home from home for 'opper.

With his accent, lisp and limp
he wasn't the most handsome
frog I'd seen.
(I thought about kissing him
to see if his demeanor would change
but, in the end, I found
him to be quite cute
just the way he was).

and...

He could sing! A singing frog!
His voice was deep and throaty
and, his lisp disappeared
as he concentrated
on his pitch.

Sometimes I wondered
just where he'd
come from as
I listened to the words...

"Yo! 'o! 'o! ...Terry-Tu me old chum
up there eating nuts while I drink me some rum
puts a gleam in me eye and a fire in me belly
Yo! 'o! 'o!...now me legs feel like jelly".

Yes indeed, 'opper surely must have a history...

    Soon the lily pond became
a home from home for 'opper.

    - I like this opening for the poem because it gives us just a small reminder of the last poem and it continues on the story very smoothly, so nicely done.

With his accent, lisp and limp
    he wasn't the most handsome
    frog I'd seen.
    (I thought about kissing him
to see if his demeanor would change
but, in the end, I found
    him to be quite cute
    just the way he was).

    - I really like this stanza because although it is quite cheeky and laughable, it actually fits into real life and how we try and change things about people. A lot of people want to change things about others without accepting who and what that person already is.
    and...

He could sing! A singing frog!
His voice was deep and throaty
    and, his lisp disappeared
    as he concentrated
    on his pitch.

    - I also like this because the frog doesn't seem to have a lot going for him and you focus on what he does have going for him, and I like the choice of him singing and the lisp going away. It reminds me of singers who have a speech problem and it goes away when singing which must offer them a lot of confidence and relief.

    Sometimes I wondered
    just where he'd
    come from as
    I listened to the words...

    - That is where this story becomes very interesting, when the reader has to come up with their own answers about who this frog is and how he ended up here. It builds a bit of suspense :)

    "Yo! 'o! 'o! ...Terry-Tu me old chum
up there eating nuts while I drink me some rum
puts a gleam in me eye and a fire in me belly
Yo! 'o! 'o!...now me legs feel like jelly".

    - This did make me giggle, I like the flow and again, the cheek, of this part. It shows more of his character by what he sings.

Yes indeed, 'opper surely must have a history...

    - nice way to end, again with the suspense building on whether you are going to give us his story, or leave it up to us to decide.

    Enjoyed this, thanks.
