Las Islas Filipinas

by Mahal Ko Kuya Ko   Nov 30, 2013

You are an
old Philippine map.
I dream of
Chocolate Hills
and Mt. Apo
as much as
I dream
of you.

You are
the bullet
that killed
Dr. Jose Rizal,
the ashes
of his
burnt poetry,
and the 'Adios'
in his
'Mi Ultimo Adios'

You are
a typhoon
as super
as Haiyan,
a memory
that resembles
the three stars
and a sun,
and the
color red
in the
Philippine flag.

You drench
my thoughts
in peppermint dusk
and keep
the fervours
in my
heart burning.

You are
my perk
of being
a Filipino,
the Tagalog
words for
'I Love You',
and the
reason why
I was born
under the
Manila sky.

I am
in a place
named after
a Spanish king,
a place
that holds
7,107 islands
made of pearls,
a third-world country,
and a harbour
of cobalt destinies
and treacherous dreams.

This place
is as old
as the
orient seas,
vivid like
the colors
of life,
and dainty
like a Tulip
from 16th century.

My heart
is a colony
of yours...
Like how
Spain colonized
the Philippines,
you can
have it
for 333 years.

You are
as perfect
as the
Mayon Volcano...
And my
love for you
is deeper
than the
Philippine Deep Sea.

My poetry
is fragrant
with Sampaguita...
I know
they are
not really beautiful.
But because
you will
always admire them,
I will
never stop writing.

In an
old Philippine map,
you reap
Sampaguitas.
And after
everything that
has happened,
it is
a Filipino spirit
to rise again.
God is
our great wings
that will
make us
fly again.

Because you do
love me,
I am proud
to be
a Filipino.

There is a voice to your poems which pulls the reader into the writer's world and the mind moves with the flow. Liked the vivid images which engages the mind too..beautifully penned!

Hi dashiel sorry it took me so long to comment but now I have my thoughts straight. This I agree is a very beautiful dedication to who you are no matter what people say about you. I loved how you stay consistent through out the poem this time as well. I can tell here you went out of your confort zone and wrote strongly from inside your heart and I loved it. Obviously you take very much pride in your heritage. I think what you are saying through out is that you are very happy for your freedom. I also loved how you seemed to personalise this and it shows how much you care for this one person. You also seem to be speaking "one voice" for all of your country members which I thought added a very loving touch. I can tell here how nuch you again take pride in the love of your country. You make the character seem so real and I think you tried to make us see through your eyes and I believe you did a wonderful job. I read through this a few times and didn't see any errors :). Very beautiful write overall though.

I was so absorbed in this poem...I have a few Filipino friends who I fondly call flips..they don't seem to mind, so I am familiar with some of the things you talk about here..the person (a hero) the final poem and the language (no..I don't speak it). Anyway...as I said ...totally absorbed until this...

    My heart
    is a colony
    of yours...
Like how...(this line here interrupted the flow I felt...it just sounded wrong and unpoetic for some reason?)
    Spain colonized
    the Philippines,
    you can
    have it
    for 333 years.

Anyway...just my thoughts that you should have another look at this part. You are obviously very proud of your heritage and that's grand...I'm very proud of mine also. Very enjoyable read.
