I have two friends who messaged tonight
On Facebook messenger in two different friend groups

The first friend is Syrian
I’ve known her a long, long time
Tonight, she messaged: We’re under attack. I’m scared.

The second friend is American
I’ve known her a long, long time
Tonight, she messaged: I’m so broken hearted. My NYE show was cancelled.

The first friend continued: A building two blocks away from us fell to the ground.

The second friend continued: Cancelled because of Omicron :(.

Juxtaposition; two separate worlds existing in the same world.
Inadequate, I don’t know how to respond to either.

Sharing those two messages, from two separate people, really emphasizes that juxtaposition, as well as the helpless feeling of not knowing what to say or how to help. It made me think of how the ones we love and are close to can be affected by seemingly different things, yet it shows somehow that we are humans going through a great ordeal in that same world. Despite the distance, despite our backgrounds, despite others trying to measure suffering or compare it, we are all struggling. And sometimes just being there for someone, to listen, is the only thing we can think to do.
