My First Valentine

by cassie hughes   Feb 12, 2022

I can still feel the chalk dust
as it clogs my nose and infiltrates
still tender lungs with prickling particles.
Punishment for inattention
redoubled when playground clamour robs
dulled senses of your approach.

A tug on hanging braid and I swirl,
Board duster weapons raised
in outraged disquiet and defence.
Surprise creates pause,
Ere swooping in soft lips place kiss
upon lime whitened cheek then run away.
