Therapy with my Demons: Anxiety

by Jack Nightengale   Feb 25, 2022

Anxiety:

Ah! It's you! It's been quite a while.
You seemed to be doing good but I no longer see your smile.
Take a seat, tell me what's on your mind. What's brought you to me?
Hurry up and open yourself and let me see!

Me:

There ain't nothing to open because you already see,
You reside inside so you know everything there is to know about me.
Kill the charade because I'm not buying it,
Let's just get this over with.

Anxiety:

Seems you've grown sturdier since the last time we spoke.
It still changes nothing when all it takes is a little poke.
Speak your mind boy, unless you plan to finally give in?
Just give up and let me take over from within!

Me:

You all are the same just wanting to shatter my life,
but none of you will exist if I end it with the knife.
Just let me be happy, let me live how I choose,
I don't want to be another part of the statistics on the news.

Anxiety:

We've come too far together to just cut ties now,
If you want to threaten us, then let me show you how?
A knife is too boring, throw yourself out the window or jump off a bridge,
Take it to a cliff or even the barren ridge.

Give it up boy, you're stuck with us and there ain't no going back,
We gave you everything, including the security that you lack.
You want us to leave? After all that we have done?
I'd laugh but this is no longer fun.

Me:

You want fun? I can give you that,
When I bash your head in with this bat!
splatter your brains on the walls and give you a nightmare,
Breaking you down until you don't care.

This is my house and you've been living rent free,
I'm not doing this for us, I'm doing this for me.
I'm breaking these chains,
I'm taking control of the reins.

Anxiety:

You test my patience, boy.
When this is over, I'll keep you for my own joy.
It seems our session is over, and I've no more time to play,
Just letting you know, that we demons, will always be here to stay.

See you next time, since there will always be a next time.
Now I wonder who's next in this line?

I love how this was written, and the back-and-forth thought process. It definitely plays as anxiety being the one to prey and ambush someone, someone who is just trying to live their life to the best of their ability. I really resonated with this. The desire to take control and hold power over anxiety, yet knowing that, even with all the strength in the world, anxiety may still creep in. But you've found your voice, you're going to try as hard as you can, and that's what matters most. Thanks for sharing!
