A great silence roamed the land And the sun grew dark that day No one there could understand Why the sky had turned away His mother knelt beneath His feet Crying, holding on her heart Watching innocence on wood Watching heaven torn apart Around the sixth hour His voice began to rise Into the Father’s hands He gave His final prize And a tear from God’s face Fell upon the ground Shaking every throne With a holy sound A tear from God’s face Opened every stone And the earth remembered We were never clean alone In the beginning was the Word And the Word became a man He walked among our broken lives With mercy in His hands But with our fear and with our pride We turned away from grace We pierced the side of love itself And could not meet His face We tell ourselves we’re innocent We hide from what we’ve done But the shadow of that cross Still reaches everyone And a tear from God’s face Fell upon the ground Shaking every throne With a holy sound A tear from God’s face Opened every stone And the earth remembered We were never clean alone His blood is not a stain That water can erase It calls us into mercy It calls us into grace Not only with a prayer Not only with a word But with the good we choose For the wounded and unheard And a tear from God’s face Fell upon the ground Breaking every silence With a holy sound A tear from God’s face Still speaks across the years Calling us to love Through repentance and through tears The sun grew dark But hope remained Love was crucified And mercy rose again
