A hero's funeral

by happy days   Apr 10, 2005

The day was so cold,
It was even snowing.
The mood was sombre,
And Tears were flowing.

The Union Jack, over
Your coffin was laid.
The flag at half mast,
And all respects, paid.

Cadets lined the route,
Standing tall and proud.
The church bells rang,
So clearly and loud.

Many people turned up,
To wish you farewell,
Safe with the knowledge,
You’re in heaven, not hell

We all stood in silence
As the Hercules flew past,
The first plane you flew
And sadly your last.

You died in a battle,
That’s claimed many lives.
Leaving behind them
Many families and wives

Your children they loved you
And miss you a lot
Pictures they’ve drawn and
memories won't be forgot

Forgotten, you won’t be.
By people who knew you
Your spirit will go on,
Helping others you knew.

As war keeps on going,
Many more will be dying.
Down on the ground,
Or in the air flying.

in our hearts we all knew
you lived your life to the best
on that friday morning
as we laid you to rest

R.I.P David Stead and all the many other soliders killed in battle

*this is a true poem, i am a cadet and had to attend a miliatry funeral on Friday of one of the pilots that was killed in Iraq in the Hercules crash at the end of January. 3 months later the family could finally lay him to rest. *

Really heart felt, and sad, it could have been written better i think though, the flow was good, and overall it was a good poem. Really sad.

One very minor thing...."And respects they were paid." For some reason "And all respects, paid." Seems to fit more, but that's most likely just me. Other than that, I loved it....very expressive.
