You Can Run But You Cannot Hide

by Bill Turner   Sep 10, 2005

There is darkness all around
Even in the light of day
In the silence you can feel your heart pound
As It comes out to play

The icy stare that you get as you walk the street
Drives you to pick up the pace
As you walk briskly, listening to the sound of your feet
Moving as if you are in a race

Stomach in your chest
Heart pounding in your ear
Do not stop no time for rest
You are driven by fear

You can feel the hot breath on your neck
As it creeps ever near
You try to blow it off, what the heck
Away from trouble I can steer

When it catches up to you
There is a sonic blast
Only a lucky few
Can escape their past

The punchline 'only a lucky few can escape their past' really jumps out and made me reread the poem again. I escaped my past by turning to God and gaining forgiveness and freedom. You are a very good writer encapsulating deep thoughts in a concise but poetic way.

I love this. very thought provoking..even haunting in a sense. One can relate to the fear of such a thing. there is something we all wish to escape from the past..
