Homeless and hungry

by Lu   Sep 19, 2005

Evicted again
nowhere to go
left out on the streets
it's starting to snow

A blanket or two
not much to pack
a rundown old car
and the clothes on their back

Four hungry mouths
but no money to feed
they're homeless and starving
she's a mother in need

Not the comfort of a bed
hard seats of her car
their fate she has decided
eternal sleep is not far

Silent tears stain her face
yet she tries not to weep
fighting a promise to herself
one she must keep

She prays God forgive me
for what I must do
no shelter , no money
this is her cue

Her babies now sleeping
the snow coming fast
near covering the tailpipe
she must wait till it's past

She pulls out the bottle
sleeping pills are her choice
one more hour they'll be in heaven
then she can rejoice

She starts up the motor
her head starting to spin
feelings of peacefulness
are about to begin

She kisses her babies
one last time on the head
and lays them all comfy
on this makeshift of a bed

The car is still running
the exhaust blocked by the snow
into a restful , peaceful sleep
they all will now go

As she has predicted
odorless gas fills the air
an end of pain for her babies
as her fingers fall from their hair

WHOA! It hurts my heart to think mothers have really endured such pain and hard decisions but you captured it so well - even a bit optimistic. I'm not one to judge their situations but I can say this was a wonderful piece. So emotional! This literally took my breath away...awesome!

Poem was very well written, and more importantly, It captured the feelings, that a mother would have, and it came through. Good job.

Oh this is so very sad Luanne! It seriously brings tears to your eyes. What a tragic story of a woman who has given up all hope. You captured this so well. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I wrote a poem about homelessness/poverty a while back called 'against the wall'. You might enjoy it. Anyway terrific writing girl! And thank you for the comment on my poems. I really appreciate it!
