Soldier For God

by amber   Nov 23, 2006

At the gate she hugged him
It was time to let him go
She sat there holding back her tears
Her pain she would not show

In his uniform he walked
With his gun on his back
He would leave the world he knew
Into the land of attacks

His son took his hand and said,
"Daddy i'll miss you while your gone."
He didn't realize where his father would go
He might not make it home

She stood there in tears
Her hands still shaking,
"Right here is where i'll be,
Patiently waiting."

He kissed her one last time
And with a smile,
"Don't cry sweetheart,
This isn't goodbye."

He walked away
As she clutched her son
Hopeing and praying
For what would come

For the next year everything was fine
But of course she lived in fear
She feared seeing that car pull up
She feared that final tear

Her son turned 7 without his dad
But he never questioned why
He knew his father was out there
And he hadn't said goodbye

Then one night her son came
And crawled into her arms
"Mama will you pray with me,
Can we keep daddy from harm?"

A tear filled her eye as she took his hands
And they got down on one knee
She silently said in her head
"Please bring him home to me."

Her son took a breath
And he started his prayer
"Lord please keep my daddy
Safe over there,

I know what he's doing,
I know he has to fight,
But please keep my prayer in mind
Keep him safe tonight."

Obviously satisfied
With what he had said
He kissed her goodnight
And he went to bed

She crawled in her bed
And lay there for a while
Remembering his last words
"This isn't goodbye."

She fell asleep
With him on her mind
Wishing she could see him
Just one more time

He whispered her name
He pulled her up
He took her and wrapped her
In a hug

"I love you sweetheart
I think it's time
I think this is it,
My final goodbye."

She knew what he meant
And tears filled her eyes
She listened as he said this
And she started to cry

He didn't have to say it
She knew what was said
He bent down
And kissed her head

The next morning she awoke
To a knock on the door
The news was told
And she fell to the floor

For in her dream
He had come to say
That in this world
He could not stay

She knew he loved her
And their son
But in this world
His job was done
