Moonlight Tragedy

by Davey   May 16, 2007

The suns long left the horizon
The moon nearly halfway in the sky
He can't believe it's nearly midnight
He opens the door, closes it softly
Surely his wife is asleep
He tosses the keys on the ground, lays back in the chair
Too tired to announce his arrival
He breathes a sigh of relief
The days over, at last.
He closed his eyes, his body demanding rest
He begins to drift away
Unaware of the absence floating around him
After awhile he begins to dream
Suddenly, the phone sounds its familiar ring
Breaking the steady silence that put him to sleep
Someone's calling, who could it be?
He reluctantly picks up the phone, and hears a voice all too familiar
It was the Chief of Police, the man who'd called about his son all too many times.
Its past one, what could be possibly be calling for?
Dread overwhelms him, like the rush of a tidal wave
"Dave, there's been an accident, your wife..."
His heart skips a beat; he can't believe what hes heard
It can't be, no, this is a joke
A whole life broken by words
He grabs his coat, and flies out the door
Driving faster than he ever has
Times on a standstill
His whole world is on the brink of defeat
His heart seems to be lifeless, hes holding his breath
The road ahead leading to the center of it all
His wife. But how? She should be sleeping, been home for hours past
Then he remembered, she was working late, there was a problem at the pharmacy
Happiness will never last
Arriving he cant believe the sight before his eyes
Lights flashing, o his heart was past dead
Police cars all around, men with fire-helmets on their head
A bitter pain so profound
Is this real? Or were his eyes made to betray?
He sees a car, all too familiar
Small and silver, smashed to pieces
The trucker never saw her coming
Drowsy and absentminded from a long day without rest
Her turned the corner, eyes half-closed, never saw the red light flash
Eighteen-Wheels brining nothing but destruction
He would rather be dead today, than this
He runs to the circle, people gathered around
There was something lying on the ground
A Policeman jumped in front of him, grabbing his arm
The man who had told him so dreadfully and silent
Who had torn his life in half, with a simple phone call
"Dave, she didn't make it"
No, it can't be
He pushed someone aside, to see what was on the ground
A woman, on a stretcher, with a sheet over her head
His wife, the only true happiness hes ever known, was dead
He falls to his knees, his face in his hands
Why, why to me? What did I do?
He was the only one of his friends who tried to do things right
Living his life according to Christ
We was the one, who ordered the coke instead of the beer
The guy you see helping people on the streets
The man who gave nearly all he had to those in need
And this, why?
The joy of his life, the greatest love hes ever known
Gone forever
Tears fall from his face, his hand hits the ground
He can't believe this is true
Will he never hold her in his arms again?
Never grasp her hand and tell her he loves her
Kiss her goodnight, and wake up to her lying beside him
Walk with her in the moonlight, staring at the stars
Fight with her then tell her hes sorry
Cry with her and her be the one who tells him its okay
O how it hurts, to see this
A truth to hard to bear
And, the worst it knowing
He never told her he loved her, never got to say goodbye
That morning they had a fight, he had left her alone
Crying and frustrated, all by his hand
He left without even a hug or a kiss
The pains, overwhelming, thousands knives caving in
But he can make it, with God on his side
Stay strong, he knows, but only time will tell
Leaving he realizes the lesson from all of this
Bad things happen to good people
So treasure the ones who you care for
Tell them you love them everyday
Because you never know if tomorrow will be their last
