Of Unicorns And Dragonflies

by debbylyn   Nov 15, 2007

I gave my love a unicorn
Mythical and fair
In turn the gift he gave to me
A strong and sturdy mare

Then I gave a hummingbird
With finest fairy wings
His gift to me a dragonfly
The ugliest of things

Once more I tried with roses
Grown of finest seeds
My bouquet was dandelions
Intertwined with weeds

To tempt his hungry palate
I cooked a gourmet dish
He in turn served me a plate
Of simple bread and fish

I told my love between the tears
You've crushed my tender heart
I've given you the finest things
One ever could impart

With unicorns and roses
All things fine to hold
My gifts to you my sweetest love
Are worth their weight in gold

You haven't seen my gifts my love
Was his sad reply
For all things have a purpose
From weeds to dragonflies

To measure true love's value
With gold to gauge it's worth
You overlook the beauty
Held by everything at birth

*for my children.....hoping they see the beauty in all things and realize that love is all that really matters
