I read somewhere that by the time I'm working (like maybe in my 20's-50's), China will become just as powereful as USA or similar anyway. I'm almost 16 and my dad wants me to learn mandarin because of it. Has anyone else heard about this?

  • Kaitlin Kristina

It will not be that long.

China is just coming to discover their power.

I doubt you'll have to learn Mandarin because of it. English will continue to be a standard language, but Mandarin will become much more prevalent.

It's kind of unsettling, knowing the future is nothing like it is now. Gosh, for all we know, a few years from now we could be having World War 3...

But then again, it might all change for the better.
And I guess every generation has a different future than what they originally thought it would be.

Ok, I had a point but now, I think I lost it...

What makes you think they aren't already just as and if not more powerful than America? Just because they don't so readily publise it and spray it all over the media doesn't mean its not happening behind clsoed doors. Actually it probably makes more likely to be happening behind closed doors...

    Hey there
Not that I would know from the political side of things, but since I live in China i'll have my say. China is really changing fast and there are so many more westeners than there used to be, and technology is also improving. I'd say that maybe in 20 years China could become as strong as the U.S or even stronger, but from the way things are now it would take time for that to happen. Also, I seriously doubt that people would have to learn Mandarin just because of that. Afterall, a lot of people can't speak English.

I highly doubt it. I've traveled all over and they don't have all of the advantages that everyone thinks. China's economy is getting stronger granted but so is Japan's and they will act as counter-balences towards each other. China's population is not that great. They have four times the population of the United States and three times the population the European Union. Numerical superiority doesn't equate military superiority. Even if they conscripted a huge army they wouldn't be able to arm and supply them all with modern military equiptment. The USSR had the same problem in WW2. A conscript army is not as well trained as a standing army (such as the American armed forces) and thusly will have a lower death/kill ratio. The E.U (European Union) would throw its bid in with the American forces if it came to war and would largely close the gap between troop numbers. And I suspect India (1.1 billion person population) would also join against China because they are potential rival super powers and India would feel threatened by a strong China on its borders.

Yes india and china will pass us up.. in about maybe 10 to 20 years china will be the largest english speaking country... also to every kid we have in normal classes they have 50 kids in honor classes... they are going to pass us up... but it always happens we had our high spot for our years now its getting close to time for us to lose the spot unless we change some things about our country... but to do that would cut off more freedoms.. and i rather not have that happen

I don't see China as a military threat, but more as a huge economic opportunity. There is a balance of power and I suspect eventually Russia will join the european community so that eventually europe and USA will negate any threat posed by an expanding China.

Lets hope that this balance avoids any conflict.

  • jason

China is one of our biggest allies... china is not a military threat... that is not what i was trying to say.. i was jsut saying that we are not going to be the top nation for very long with how things are going... and once we are not the top nation its going to be pretty jumpy on who is.. itll change alot... and i do not mean military wise i eman with like jsut the top i dont know how to explain it... we will most likely always have one of the strongest militarys but yeah

China is defiantely stronger than the USA. They don't have to attack us, though. They make us guns and we do the job for them.

  • Jack

I also don't regard China as a threat to the USA .it is really a good opportunity for the world's economy! In ww1 and ww2 China was always the alliance of the USA .they both fought against the same enemies of them .so don't think that China is a threat to the USA.China will not be the USA's enemy forever!

If we wouldn't send all of our jobs overseas then we'd be the number one nation, no question. china keeps all of it's business to itself. no wonder they're so good

Ok look the only reason we have to send jobs over seas is because the people over seas are more educated then we are.. they meet more of the requirments and some.. that is why we send them over seas... so what you we saying.. not nikki but the eprson before is that if we had a better education we would be the number one nation = p

Shhhhh...y'all are not suppose to know what China's doing. We're a peaceful nation that provides processed goods for the world...that is all. :p

China isn't a threat partially because we (I'm Chinese) don't want to be one. We want to do our thing and get ready first. We need to catch up. If the need should be, we want to fight but there wouldn't be any if we can't afford it. So keep buying "Made in China" please and thank you :D

I don't think we're communists any more. If you ask me, Canada seems to be more of a communistic country...well at least economically. We (I'm sorta Canadian) work, we pay taxes, we get benefits from what we give to the gov't, we drink proudly Canadian beer, and we love "beavers" =P

China's still in the middle of trying to find a firm political balance. Things can get touchy. That's why the gov'ts need to act "tough" at times to avoid revolutions.

To the person that admits to be a Chinese and claims China to be a "shit country" mainly for political reasons...we all do ugly things at times. No country or person can stand and say they've never done anything they wouldn't be proud of (well I may be challenged on that haha). The world doesn't just come in black-and-white (...there's also yellow, brown, red, and more :p...). It's more of a grey. Who's to judge what's completely right and what's completely wrong? To be politically correct, there are only "acceptably" rights and wrongs.

As for learning another language, such as Mandarin, why not? It would make bargaining easier hehe.

    Back to China

we use chop sticks...we're the mother of chopsticks. we have a good "old time" longer than Japan's. The geography in China is nice too. I'm sure you can find an era in the Chinese history that you'd like too...so why not Chinese? =P

All that said, you still can't be Chinese or Japanese. Unless you're partially those too...haha...what's your other part(s)??
