I am a survivor

by Dagmar Wilson   Mar 17, 2016

That moment when I heard the door closing behind
with all my memories inside,
my heart stopped beating.

I can't remember how I made it to the next corner
my body kept pushing for a safe place to hide.
This road I had to travel taught me how to survive
the people I met along the way were a true blessing.

When you think there is no way out
God will send one of his Angels to make it right.

I can relate exactly to the feelings portrayed here. The words capture how it feels to be in that situation.

    Hello Dagmar

    "I am a survivor"

    ^^^^^^

A powerful and telling title that left me in little doubt as to the tone and themes of the poem: strength and resilience.

The first stanza starts at the beginning of what will (I presume) lead to the survival bit; this is what you had to face first before you reached that stronger and better place, as it were. You leaving somewhere that is special to you and holds many memories as you are no longer able to stay, for whatever reasons. Many scenarios in life can push us into less hospitable places, physically and emotionally.
"my heart stopped beating" - heart breaking line, by the way.

Next stanza. Now, after the title, I'm looking for some of the strength the title promised and I find it: "I can't remember how I made it to the next corner...."
    ^^^^^

But you did! Hard roads teaching you to survive and strong people who have helped you through the hard times. As above, here we find your inner strength.

And then the punchy, inspirational last two lines which offer everyone hope. The lines tell everyone that you yourself received an angel and you promise others the same when they are in that predicament. I take a lot from that and I'm sure others will too.

    Nominated.

    Take care, Dagmar

I really like this, you escaped and as hard as it can be you have survived and continue to thrive. That alone is something to be extremely proud of! Take care. Brenda
