Flying With Venus

by Larry Chamberlin   Apr 6, 2017

Pre-dawn heading to the airport
the hidden sun casts a yellow haze
presaging it's arrival;
above the horizon
floating in indigo brilliance
is the morning star shining a beacon
along the path that leads to you;
tells me your plane will be meeting me;
your arms will enfold me for the day.

These Grand Escapes we make
are not just important for our marriage,
they secure my basic mental health,
giving me strength to carry on
other distasteful parts of my life.

All labor becomes worthy
with you as the reward.

    The message is clear and simple yet deeply personal at the same time. A poem that many have shared and can relate to I think, the zest of longing and excitement when we rush to meet our loved ones. Well executed and so easy to see the love shining through. The imagery had me sitting in that car off to the airport!

    The imagery in this piece is so amazing, it feels like story told through a painting. The rhythm is smooth like paint on a canvass and the vivid images are just the right thing to really make this piece pop. Length and style were both spot on here too and the title was so phenomenal that I kept playing around with it in my head wondering what exactly it would mean to the author. Great piece, very well written.

    Thank you to you all for your kind comments. The most endearing comment was a kiss, which came from my wife when I read it to her on the evening after I wrote it.
