Silent Reasons (villanelle)

by Krathia   Mar 24, 2008

In the dead of the night, she asks the silence why
She gave up on a heart she had never known
To the beat of her heart, she gives no reply

Too proud to admit that she had gone awry
To realize that her mistakes were her own
In the dead of the night, she asks the silence why

Her tender heartache she tries to deny
Shutting her eyes, she suppresses a groan
To the beat of her heart, she gives no reply

She could not hold back a shuddering sigh
So eagerly had her misery grown
In the dead of the night, she asks the silence why

Hearing no answer, she begins to cry
For her hurting had at last sunk to the bone
To the beat of her heart, she gives no reply

In soothing darkness, her tears were swift and spry
For someone she had left behind, alone
In the dead of the night, she asks the silence why
To the beat of her heart, she gives no reply

Amazing poem! First of all, an interesting structure you used fitting the poem so well, and making the whole poem bit stronger.
Like I understood it's about a girl leaving someone dear behind, because the emphasis is on how the girl is feeling and how it's killing her, but I'm sure there is more to it. Really loved the subject.
Pain in the poem is heart-breaking and touching. In some places trying to hold it down and fight against it:
"Her tender heartache she tries to deny"
    Specially loved the sentence
"To realize that her mistakes were her own" As we tend to blame others when not seeing that we are the one making the mistakes.
    The end
"To the beat of her heart, she gives no reply"
Her soul is dead, but her body still functioning. Brilliant!
