In His Footsteps

And he smiled and said: "You sure do have his eyes,"
Standing solitary, he waited for me to reply;
And I stood a moment to think my answer through,
Before I finally took a breath and sighed: "How could you?"

I heard the streets are usually cold this time of year,
And I'm predicting it gets colder the longer you're away from here;
You're out looking for love in all of the wrong places,
Judging how easy it will be by all of the thinned-out faces.
And I heard her crying last night, screaming at the top of her lungs,
Saying all of the words she left standing on the tip of her tongue.
I almost broke down and caved in, listening to the dial tone,
But that's better than an empty promise of you coming home.
I heard it through the grapevine that you were finally clean,
Ha, I haven't been that foolish since I was seventeen!

I thought it kind of odd, earlier today when I saw your face,
That if I took the time, conveniently I could retrace,
All of your damn misdeeds, all of the bullshit you spoke,
But I bet you didn't know; after all, it's hard to see through smoke.

Your friends left you alone, attired in blood and bruises,
And in the game you're playing, the winner always loses.
It's not about trust, It's about entertainment and money,
So you got your way with a broad that let you call her honey;
And I heard the streets got colder when you had nowhere to go,
Your mind played tricks on you, tell me it isn't so?
And now, because of all your selfish little lies,
When the love of my life looks into my eyes,
He sees my feet falling in the place of where yours have stood:
Going down the roads that they never thought they could.

Looking at an old photo today, I smiled and said: "My Dad,
He wasn't the greatest, but he was all I ever had."
And he smiled and said: "You sure do have his eyes,"
Standing solitary, he waited for me to reply;
And I stood a moment to think my answer through,
Before I finally took a breath and sighed: "How could you?"
