The music box dancer

by Ingrid   Aug 26, 2008

Hypnotizing pirouettes and a heavenly tune

As the box opens she reaches for the moon

Little ballerina trapped in her confined space

Waiting to perform her dance with ultimate grace

Her fragile beauty no one will see

except for the girl who owns the key

Dedicated to the millions of women in this world, who have never known and will never know personal freedom.

    Ingrid,

This is such a charming and perceptive poem full of yearning. The spirit can be broken but never silenced. Excellent work.

My favorite lines of this poem. There are many ways that this poem could be understood. Neither way demeaning to the beauty that you have wrote. It's kind of like the bible, you can read it many times and get a different understanding each time. I read over this several times and got two meanings. 1. a woman who is still tangled with the awkwardness of finding her inner beauty and still holds onto the factor of being trapped for that is her only security. 2. A woman who for many years has undergone abuse not only from someone else but herself. A woman who has been undermined and does not believe that she will ever be anything more than a "music box dancer"
Both tie in together but both give a sense of longing to the poem. I for one was the #2 of which i theorized on. It hit home for me and almost brought tears to my eyes to know that someone else could write about a pain that i once felt. Thank you very much for this write. it has opened my eyes to what i once was and what i have improved myself to be. You are an amazing poet and i look forward to reading more of your work.
    Thank you so much,

I think this is such a tounching poem. For me there's so much meaning put into just those 6 short lines. It's amazing what words can do. This definitely is something quite a few woman can relate too as well. I read it over a couple of times and it never seems to lose it's shine. It's lovely and beautiful every single time. My favourite line by far is this:

"Little ballerina trapped in her confined space"

^Somehow it's just the perfect metaphor. The whole music box concept is so easy for people to envision as they read the poem. I, personally, could see the music box with the ballerina spinning around and around inside as a little girl holds it in her little hands. The magic and beauty created by your words is honestly incredible.

"Her fragile beauty no one will see
except for the girl who owns the key"

^I assume the girl with the key is actually the person themselves. As in no one else will see the inside of you except you yourself. That is so true for so many people. We all feel trapped in ourselves never wanting to truly open up ourselves to anyone because of the fear we all have.
I just love it. Seeing as I've writen about ten times as more then the poem on a comment, I think it's pretty clear. Great work. Keep it up! :)
