The Unmarked Door

by LettersFromEnnis   Mar 8, 2010

Congratulations!

You are one of the lucky chosen
Please go through the big doors that read
-Welcome to your life!-
Your destiny will be waiting inside

So...
You walk in
And you see a colossal room
With grandeur unlike anything you.ve ever seen

Inside this room
Is door
After door
After door after door after door

Each one has a certain aura
With certain sounds coming out of each one
There are happy sounds
And there are not-so-happy sounds

You wonder what is behind each one
When you realize one is marked with a name
As if it were pre-made
Just for you
Then you look around
They are all marked
Every single one
Every... single one

Why must they be marked?
Are you not allowed to make a door of your own?
Are you not expected to choose who you want to be?
And take your own path?

You study the doors
And what they read
Your mouth drops
And the smallest drop of water escapes your eye

You are stupid
Worth nothing
Not good enough
And weak

Next door

You will do terrible in school
You will eventually give up
And drop out
Maybe you.ll do drugs
And get pregnant at an early age
He will beat you
You.ll go through a miscarriage
And you.ll hate yourself forever

Next door

You will start off small
By maybe tagging a little here and there
Then maybe you.ll try to steal a car or rob a house
And you.ll officially be in the gang
A time will come to prove your bravery
So you.ll face off another gang
Get shot three times
Die
And be forgotten
So you.ll only have proven your stupidity

Next door

You will come from a disadvantaged family
With no money
Your house will crumble to dust
And you.ll be forced to jump a border
You will end up in a new country
Take someone.s job
Wreak havoc
Be no one special
And out of place
You will be wanted nowhere
So you.ll get caught by the police
Be sent back to the dust you came from
And never see your family again

Next door

You will fail at everything
You will never reach your dreams
Because who you are doesn.t allow you to
You are not supposed to

Next door

You will...

Next door

You will...

Next door

You will
You will
You will
You will
You will
You will
You will
You will

No

You won.t

You won.t do as the doors tell you
What he or she or they or society tells you
You will do
What you choose

Forget the stereotypes
The underestimations
The belittlers
And everything

Focus
Not on the marked doors
Nor on what they say
But the unmarked door

This is the door
Which you will create
And will allow you to be
Everything the other doors don.t

So hold that head up high
Know your name
Accomplish those dreams
And go your own way
For through that unmarked door
Awaits the life you want to lead

So congratulations for getting through!
