Liquid Courage

by Sylvia   Apr 9, 2010

Hands shake reaching for the bottle,
full of amber liquid courage.
Afraid to touch it, regretting the need
felt to bolster your cowardice
with this evil sweet nectar,
the life blood you desire.
Just one sip to start the day,
then another to ease the pain,
another to face a miserable existence.
So it goes, more and more sips,
until there sits an empty container.

Panic, desperation overwhelming,
have to replenish the bounty
knowing without this liquor
the world will surely come to an end.
Alcohol owns your soul completely,
dominates every part of the day and night.
Allows a masquerade to be perpetuated
every waking minute.
Clouds judgment, tricks the mind
to think consuming this evil demon fluid
makes everything bearable.

Will you ever recognize that it changes nothing,
doesn't resolve problems, only creates them.
Don't you care that it alienates family and friends,
love turns to hate for this booze you crave
that takes you away from them?
Before a spirit is annihilated altogether,
find the strength to confess,
you are an alcoholic.
Wrest a good man from the grasp,
take control once again, with God's help,
let you emerge to live anew.

Well my view on alcoholism is a bit different from yours. but that would mainly be because i am a 21 year old college student with a bit of depression. that's not to say my reasons to drink are any less harmful in the long run.

i can still see the point you made, and it was quite a profound write. nice job

Alcohol does indeed destroy so many things. family , the own person lives, creates problems, ect. youve listed them all. its sad and very hard to live with someone who depends so much on alcohol to "solve their problems" when really it does only create more . ive witnessed it myself, and its hard to watch someone like that just throw their life away. brilliant job.

Sylvia this was excellent poem showing what Liquor can do to people and sadly though many people today fall victim to it. You clearly stress that it doesn't take away problems like many people think but causes them. Good job.
