Firefly

by Mortal Utopia   Jun 14, 2012

As a firefly, glowing softly,
Fly onto my hand,
I remember a conversation
We had from long ago...

"If you ever have another life after this,
What would you be?"

"A firefly."

"Why?"

"Mmm...perhaps so I can be
Someone's light in this world.
Well...and also, I like to look pretty."

"Is the world too dark?"

"The world has so many sad sad things,
...but also beautiful things!"

"We live in a big world, don't we?"

"Perhaps." ...

The firefly, on my hand,
Fades and fades and fades
Fusing with the inanimate night
Once again...perhaps forever,
Wherefore did you die so soon, firefly?

This world is ever changing,
I know, I know...
Or perhaps I don't, not really.

I like poems that use dialogue to tell the story. Personification of a firefly is genius.

    Well done.
