His words were bullets
Tearing holes in her defences
Her cutting comments
Leaving him hanging on barbed wire
Their yelling was louder
Than the bombs, than the gunshot
Tears blinding her like poison gas
The war was alive, passion,
Anger sparking within them
Two countries clashing
Causing the world to shake
No one thought to consider
The small child, caught in the crossfire
"I can't help but feel myself relating to this and as I reread this poem it instantly has my thoughts wandering back into my own childhood. As adults, we often forget that our children see and learn everything from us and we need to start taking more care to ensure they don't get caught up in our own fights and wars with our loved ones or with our ex-partners as it often ends up destroying them later in life. I enjoyed the similes used in this as I thought it gave the words more emotion and power and allows people to understand just what these sort of situations can do to a small child. To say this was such a short poem I found it to be relate-able and moving and can only hope that more people read these and actually think about it and stop putting their children in the middle of their battles. Lovely poem written about something that needs more attention. "
This is amazing! That imagery is wild! Using warfare as a metaphor for an explosive relationship, that's perfect! I also love how you painted such a vividly detailed picture with such a small poem; that's not easy to do.
I know firsthand how that child feels, and it's sad that parents/guardians don't consider their children, when they're tearing each other apart because it has an effect on them too. I think this may be the first poem I've read of yours, if I'm not mistaken, but it won't be my last. I would've nominated, but I can't anymore, so I'll just have to favorite :)
It's true, parents don't stop and think of the affects that their constant bickering has over their children. They live in fear in their bedroom, afraid of being caught in the crossfire... or they grow up and think that's a normal lifestyle and fall into habit with it in their own family.
Wonderful poem with a heartfelt message about the damages that could be done with fighting in front of your child. Love it.
This really is such a meaningful poem yet it's all
So true ... A topic which I have never seen a poem
Written . It's amazing how much a young child can soak
Up during an argument between mum and dad .

Oh my gosh. This just breaks my heart. Too often the parents fight and scream and yell at each other in front of their babies and little ones - not realizing what they're doing to them.
I must say, you're taking PnQ by storm, & everything you write is flawless.
I totally have to put you in my favorite authors. Nominated this piece!
