A Wish Upon...

by Poet on the Piano   Aug 24, 2013

She is looking, always looking.
In the strangest places, in the weakest
moments, when her stomach is empty,
full, halfway decent,
when in nature's ageless surrounding.
Mostly though, eyes take their own action
at bookstores where she feels
like people's guard will be down,
trying to find comfort in
the tolerant skin of paperbacks.

For years she has disgracefully
searched for arms like hers
peeking out from shields.
Of course she never wants it
for anyone else, but she can't help
wonder if she is not alone why
there hasn't been anyone to
understand this too.

A man offers her sunlight like it
has never caused pain before,
entering her garden one winter's
day to ask why he has only seen
her outside during the cold
morning hours... why she hasn't
painted flower pots while summer
could warm her skin.

And it isn't until their proposal
five years later that her secrets
are no longer decayed- she
closes the white gate encasing
her house, with him inside,
and shows him what is horrible,
what society would call unlawful.

She needed to let him know it
wasn't a felon, wasn't a danger.

And he, not done for any reward,
takes her to a meadow hours later
where words had walled every
dream that could have grown.

He had become lost without
a properly labeled key; he had
treasured his secret with emotions
that teased him constantly.

They know each other more than
anyone else. Her search is finished
because each day they passionately
hold each other's arms not so
others will smile at them,
but so they will not hate themselves
at bedtime for carving old memories,
now already walked through.

And nothing is heard from them
for centuries, everything is a blur,
a melody still trampling over the
heart's strains yet still
playing a tune.

-
She awakes, letting her eyes adjust
to the darkness she knows would
not rest until her lungs can't take
another breath...

gazing outside the window,
the night is without stars
and there is no place for her
to wish on,
no stardust remaining,
only a black galaxy.
