Pretty And Everlasting

by Mahal Ko Kuya Ko   Jan 27, 2014

When I was ten,
I wrote a poem about Daisies--
how they slept when your eyes
twinkled in repose.

At twelve,
I promised myself
to write an essay
in the petals
of these Daisies for you--
an essay about
how your eyes harbour
the ever flourishing moonlight.

I never knew you hated Daisies
all those times,
so I lost the chance to tell you
that you are the world to me.

And every long lost Tagalog romance
only makes these Daisies more archaic--
urging them to make offerings
to ancient Tagalog deities
that even Austronesian history
doesn't have the memory to tell
if really existed.

---

Your eyes are like Mango orchards
in Guimaras--
they house 8,000 hectares of reasons
to never let go.
(Do you remember...
it was you who told me
that the scientific name of Mango
is Mangifera Indica L.?)

---

You didn't mind
what my eyes could see...
You seemed like a Daisy to me--
innocent, and a morning person.
(But I am believing
that the moon
is beautifully reflected
in your eyes.)

I fell in love
with the way your eyes
teach those walls how to paint
abstract paintings.

Years later,
I still hope you will know
that you still appear
like a Daisy to me--

pretty and everlasting.

Bellis Perennis is the scientific name of Daisy.
Bellis is Latin for "pretty" and perennis is Latin for "everlasting".

There is an innocence to this write as it unfolds with a young love. How that love developed and the purity.

To have found this innocent love and still hold on to it as years rolled by is priceless. I loved the read from start to finish...lovely!

This is so beautiful, I don't think i'm being bias by the title lol.

but I seriously love that ending:

    Years later,
I still hope you will know
    that you still appear
    like a Daisy to me--

    pretty and everlasting.

ah who I am kidding, I actually like the whole poem. I like the atmosphere how it's tint with sadness but also it has this innocent and lovely feel. I also like the memories I'm taking into as well as how you engage the reader by asking a question to the other person. It's kind of a reminiscing moment but with that someone or only with you, I'm not sure. But While I was reading, I was picturing two people having a sweet conversation. I feel that this person doesn't see exactly what you see in her, she hates daisies and you see her as one, except that by a daisy to you, means that she is pretty and everlasting. It is sweet. 5/5
