Reasons To Hate Winter

by JaneDoeWrites   Dec 16, 2014

Winter,
the beast that drives me
into love's arms when it's untimely,
that corners me into romanticized
ideas because the holidays are
a time for love, the cold a time for
vacationing under quilted blankets,
where frosty cheeks are warmed by
soft-spoken affections

but Winter forgets,
my skin is a hard permafrost
unlikely broken by Cupid's
arrow.

Winter,
so pale and still
and foggy and bare,
making even lonliness seem
that much more lonelier, it
has the habit of
wreaking havoc on
hearts already riddled with
anxiousness but
speaks with a fervor of
sweet promises like
it were spring.

That bastard
Winter,
that makes me seek you out
in poems and in songs
and in the stars,
that inspires me to paint and knit and
sing, that calls me to lay my head
on your chest after long days
because there's been far too many
frigid nights recently for me to survive
out there on my
own.

I hate Winter
in all it's entirety
because it made me
love you like madness,
when your kiss
and your name were still fresh
on my breath and I didn't
know the color of your

eyes.

This piece is wonderful, it can be taken in so many different ways, but at the same time it's something so completely personal that no one can understand it, partially or fully . The descriptions here not only move the story along at the perfect pace but they are written in such a way that they convey more of the emotion than the words themselves, more so than the personal touches and extra words. There is a voice that is so beyond unique in this that it truly stands out and it blew me away so completely.

I am a fan of poetry where the title suggests something, like in this case a list, and then the poem itself contains that list. I find it works quite well when done properly.

I find this quite a deep write, quite honest in your reasoning about not liking the winter, and I also find it is a poem which I can relate to. How we can have triggers for things, and relate things to moments, memories, people, feelings etc.

I think your opening was well worded, really describing what winter should be, and how it is a time for being warm and buried beneath the blankets.

You really do have a talent for wording poems very greatly, and descriptively.

I also think you added in your anger here with the swearing word, (Bad Girl, lol) but I think it fits with the poem, and how you feel towards this person. It is like you love them, but hate them, and this is why it hurts/affects you so much!

Nice work Crystal, I enjoyed this and could relate to the content.
