The River Flows

by CJ Maleney   Mar 9, 2017

Life is still a journey but it's not an open road, it's a living body of water and the river always flows

Paddle in hand I make my way steadily along. Sometimes going with the flow edging and turning propelling myself to where I wish to be.

Sometimes I will be paddling up stream, fighting against the flow, body and brain screaming against the exertion but the river will not stop and nor can I lest I be swept away.

The river will twist and turn and I know not where it takes me but I constantly survey never looking back, future water is key to surviving or she bites me in the arse.

With every off shoot a different scenario. Sometimes she will break into a lake and I slow down to fully appreciate what's happening around me and absorb the beauty.

Other times it will meet the ocean. The river has not ended! At the other end of that ocean is another river. The river will always flow.

Sometimes I will hit rapids and propel myself down them as fast as I can without thought or care for self preservation, it's me against the river.

One day she may win but it is not today.

Sometimes there will be waterfalls sometimes a loch. Sometimes portage Is unavoidable. Things may hinder my journey but they do not stop me and they can not stop the river. She will always find her way. She is unrelenting.

There will come a time when I cannot handle the river and when that time comes I will be on her I will throw away my paddle and let her take me. She will not care, she will not even know.

There is a saying amongst paddlers

"I will paddle until I can paddle no more, when that time comes I hope I'm paddling"
