the year in which the yellow fishes drowned

by Sai   Jul 25, 2017

You were my nightbook.
In you, I traced my stories
with hesitant fingers

to create constellations
capable of illuminating
a distant planet's
oceans.

I don't recall if I ever told you
but your poetry
reminds me of the way

a massive thing
cowers into the distance
until it is but a speck

of light
of dust

and we both know
that it can swallow us whole
but from here
we are unafraid

in awe of its splendour

until it comes crashing
onto the shore.

Luckily, I don't mind
the yellow fishes
anymore.

Judging comment: The power someone can have over us, with their words, with their heart, with their actions, is an all consuming thing sometimes, and I felt like this piece pulled those feelings right from my heart. I love the flow of this poem, it was original and pulled me in with every word. Awesome job!

Is nightbook a reference to the same titled album by Einaudi? If not, well you should check it out, it’s really good, some of my favourites on that album are ‘the crane dance’, ‘nightbook’ and both the snow preludes. Sorry, on a tangent. Your use of imagery is superb, and this is testimonial to that; I conjured up images that were a mix between ‘starry night’ and ‘the great wave’, for the first stanza, and the latter stanzas reminded me of a supernovae. I don’t know how else I could best describe it lol.

    This is beautiful. :)

I'll be sure to listen to those. Also, I appreciate you saying that, as I could only hope to write something that's capable of evoking such magnificent images with words. Thank you.
