This City that Engulfs Me

by Maple Tree   Jan 15, 2018

I hear sirens richotching cross chipped billboards
drowning in a sea of people with colored hats,
hollow eyes and scarves wrapped tightly.

Vines adorn bricks older than I, can't help but
feel edgy; do you hear the whiskey pouring?
numbing hearts up and down Gennesse street?

My depression isolates me, yet I feel the tears
on every single street corner I pass by,
trashy alleys and chimney smoke; awakens me.

Madness weeps under broken window panes
as adultery showers broken homes with tainted lies,
sorrow aline gutters where humans dropped like flies.

I live in this city because it's filled with realistic,
metaphoric poetry; it's enormous in its history and
nobody gives a damn about me….

but I do, and that's why I share the only smile I own,
under a full moon; as the policeman chase and stray dogs howl, because this city engulfs me.

Wow. This is amazing Andrea, It is so visual and full of emotion I feel like I'm walking with you. I would have definitely nominated it. You have a talent for drawing in the reader to feel what you feel and see what you see at that moment in time. I know when I lived in London it was to me one of the loneliest place I have ever lived. All my best wishes and prayers Milly x

Andrea I love this poem of yours, the way you express yourself, the sincerity in which you confront the objects of feeling and expressions; it shows a lots of versatility in your part.

I grew up in a big city and for most part we had no idea of what was going on except familiar areas. You are anonymous. A big city can and will eat you alive. It also can be very depressing to the point that nobody seems to care. This is a very sad write but I can see strenght and the ability to survive. You love your city afterall. All the very best to you.
