Return of Favors

by Larry Chamberlin   Aug 21, 2019

It was wholly unexpected
when my wife plopped down beside me.
I shared her flight back home
which she worked as attendant;
when she sat down it was
a softness I never anticipated
with her smooth arm brushing
against my rough sleeved shirt.

She asked my opinion on a future pairing:
whether it was better to go late one day
or get off much earlier on a later day,
but all I could think of was
how nice she felt beside me
and how she smelled like
a hundred better days ahead.

I agreed with her not even caring
whatever was the result
- just
- stay.

I will listen to all that is set out
and give my honest opinion
but understand that such opinion
entirely results from your
unexpected, beloved entrance
into my private space
on this plane.

She is your muse, indeed. This was a lovely, genuine dedication to her and memory of meeting with her, and perhaps knowing she would be your everlasting love?

The best lines in my opinion were:

"but all I could think of was
how nice she felt beside me
    and how she smelled like
    a hundred better days ahead."

So genuine and heartwarming. I am happy you both have found each other and are deeply connected, I just adore when you write poems about, for or to her!
