Fire

by CJ Maleney   Oct 7, 2019

Bring me forth the fire,
For it is something that I yearn.
I feel somewhat cold and dark inside,
And I need to feel it burn.

I need to feel its passion,
To once more be engulfed.
When everything seems so mundane,
I need that desire and that rush.

One can hide behind a mask.
Pretend you are as shiny as a star,
But when time folds back you flick to black,
And remember who you are!

The desire cannot be sated,
The need! longs to be set free,
You throw caution to the wind again,
And again let free the beast.

You think that you can rein it in?
To have some modicum of control?
You can only hold that leash so long,
Before the animal takes its hold.

For me, this piece reads like a story of addiction. I can feel the need, the want the author has to feel something beyond the ordinary.

I love the line "You can only hold that leash so long."

I suppose it is in some ways but it's more about escaping the mundane.
