If It's of Any Consolation

by nouriguess   Jul 5, 2020

The chapel,
the flocks of hoopoes,
the cemetery on the left side.

Look around, it's full of
chrysanthemums.
You'd read
an epitaph that diminishes
your years into
a couple of words.

"1989-2018"
"Here lies Ram, a loyal soldier,
a brave martyr"

Then turn around, to
a half-broken
wooden bench leaning on
the cobblestone wall,
I'm there every afternoon,
make a sound

when you see me,
any sound,
like a breeze in a hurry,
or a sudden rain outburst.

Or shine on my hair,
a signally warm sunray.

To the chapel, again,
the prayer-crammed sky.
Then, leave me.
A farewell is all it takes for me
to live in peace.

Noura, this is very moving and beautifully written. The title is also perfect and you've captured this element of grief so very poignantly.:-) x

I too find grave yards very comforting. So many souls. I also wish for a sign to let me know they see me too.

Noura, I picnicked in a graveyard just the other day next to my grandfather 's grave. It sounds funny, but I always find incredible peace in a graveyard. But I, too, wish a simple sign like a sudden gust of wind or a torrential downpour would just appear and make things a little easier to bare.
    I welled up reading this.

    Take care
