The Orange Flashing Light

That orange flashing light
May not be blue or red
But we ask that you take note of it
For a loved one may be dead

We are not the emergency services
And yet we play our part
Sometimes we seem immune to things
But be assured we have a heart

The police may close roads and motorways
But it's us that get them clear
Quite often we are found rescuing
The ones that you hold dear

You may get so frustrated
That your journey is now so slow
But someone's loved one may have died
A pain you do not wish to know

We may not be greenflag, AA or RAC
Yet those guys really play their part
But we are the ones who are called to task
When the grim stuff really starts

We pull you out of trees and ditches
We get you unstuck when it snows
Just how austere our job can be
I guess you'll never know

Most won't see us with our backs in the mud
At this point most are gone
And although we clench our teeth and swear a lot
The job just carries on

We won't quit until it's completed
Though sweat and tears may sting our eyes
This is simply what we do in life
We're just recovery guys

Our hands are often cramped with cold
Sometimes our bodies drenched in sweat
But we excel with toil and pride
And thats the part that most won't get

You see we take that pride in our work
Despite the challenges we face
But the satisfaction so often comes
From getting you home safe

This is the part I love the most
And some are probably wondering why
Because the unfortunate or the stupid
Could one day be one of mine

We don't ask for your thanks or praise
But we would ask you hear a plea
If you see those flashing lights move over

Or the next fatal could be me
