Deep Inside the Coal

by BOB GALLO   Jun 20, 2021

There, deep inside the coal mine was pitch black,
Everything was doused in darkness
but the smiles of the miners,
the smell of their pain in their sweat;

like the mine was mining in them
sucking in and drawing out
the ivory of their bone,
the milk of their existence.

Snowflakes on
the molten tar
of their fates.
