First Steps

Silence overtakes a space once filled with chatter,
Regret and fear now replace carefree laughter;
Her heart no longer beats quickly
With love, it is now substituted with acidity
As she lays on the floor in isolated clarity.

Longing treads water in aqua eyes,
As reflections of memories play across
While her smile quivers as it fractures the disguise
Of a soul; her self-doubts manifest as her worst albatross.

Her mind encourages her to rise above the defeat,
To burn with a fire as bold as the sun,
For she has much to offer this cruel world, however a taxing feat;
Leaving much self-hate to be undone.

She sighs heavily as she stands,
Wrapping her arms around her frame as tightly as she can,
For only she can hold herself together the way she needs,
These are her first steps to being utterly, peacefully, free.
